How to Wean Your Toddler

The Ultimate Do’s of Weaning Babies

Weaning a toddler comes with its own inherent risks. These risks can be easily prevented by forethought and common sense. When the baby reaches the age of six months, the age by which the World Health Organization recommends as the ideal time when to introduce solids, you must do the following things while weaning a baby.

  1. Do puree completely any solid foods given to babies when they are four months of age. The recommended foods at this early weaning stage are baby rice, well-cooked chicken, peeled and cored vegetables and non-citrus fruits, and split lentils.

  2. Do test the temperature of hot foods before you give them to your baby. It may seem lukewarm to you, but remember that you are dealing with a baby here. The upper portion of the meal might have cooled down, but the bottom part didn’t. Use shallow bowls and check the food temperature thoroughly before feeding the baby.

  3. Do let the baby feed himself if he wants to, and avoid force-feeding.

  4. Do introduce a variety of textures and tastes to your baby’s food. The same old baby cereal will nourish your baby, but it’s wonderful if you can let the child explore other delicious treats.

  5. Do add finely chopped or food-processed fruits and vegetables to your baby’s diet.

  6. Do make sure that the homemade baby food you have prepared has no hard-to-digest ingredients like whole nuts.

  7.  Do make sure that you are using food-grade and baby-safe plastic utensils and bowls. Avoid the brittle plastics that may have potentially carcinogenic BPA-laced linings.

  8. Do allow the baby to enjoy himself when self-feeding or being fed. It is best to let the baby eat on the high chair with the family during mealtimes. This fosters an emotional bond in the family.

  9. Do consult with your health care provider first if you are thinking of weaning your baby earlier than six months, most especially if your baby has been born prematurely.

  10. Do experiment on many recipes for weaning foods so that your baby will enjoy a variety of flavors and tastes. This is also a great idea because you will then discover your child’s favorite foods.

  11. Do treat babies as babies. It is recommended that they are offered something to eat every three hours.

  12. Do keep tabs on your baby’s food intake so that you can monitor whether or not his food consumption will give him enough nutritional support. If a baby self-feeds, then the food will most likely go to waste and scattered on the high chair.
